A Long Long Valentine's Night

from Cartoon Physics by Marc Gallagher

/

about

Written as part of two different songwriting challenges in the hope to kill two birds with one stone. The first prompt was "You wanted the gentle truth, but all I could do was ____" and the second was simply "Valentines". I decided to explore the idea of a failing relationship around the festive period, through a lens of cynicism at the performative nature of consumerist Valentine's Day gift-giving.

lyrics

The world is spinning in its cycle halfway through month two
I see the festive cheer so insincere as folks say "I heart you"
Chocolate kisses greet me as I lie in bed awake
I feel guilty 'cos I don't feel the same way.

As the weeks and months pass you're less interesting to me
This rose we lay is just some sticky tape on a boat head out to sea
And when the sun will rise and love is out of style this ship will sail and sink
And I don't know if I can swim.

You say "Je t'aime" and wait for my reply
It would still pain me to have to see you cry
You wanted the gentle truth but all I could do was lie
It's been a long long valentine's night.

Excuse my sour grapes as I'm the apple of your eye
In this annual pretense that I like the taste of wine
I see it as half empty and my thirst remains un-quenched
For someone else you're heaven-sent

My feet blister as I dance around this harsh reality
And how it stings clipping my wings to keep you company
I want to guide your hand and show there's still fish in the sea
And there's an ocean waiting out for me.

You say "Je t'aime" and wait for my reply
It would still pain me to have to see you cry
You wanted the gentle truth but all I could do was lie
It's been a long long valentine's night.
It's been a long long valentine's night.
It's been a long long valentine's night.
