City Bells

from Cartoon Physics by Marc Gallagher

about

In 2019 I had the pleasure of playing Galway Uke Festival. Despite being of Irish heritage and an Irish citizen I had never visited the ROI, much less Galway. To walk through the streets of a foreign yet familiar land and to see banners with my face on was something so awe-inspiring, and I had the most wonderful of weekends.

I wrote this song as a thank you to the festival, and to the city. I hope to return one day.

lyrics

I step off the plane, breathe the wind of a land I’ve never been
Swap the air for the rails, the fields racing behind my screen
Feel the cold of the ocean breeze, voices that remind me of a forgotten home
Feel the buzz in the centre, decorated with banners and posters with my face on

Those city bells, they call me
And at the time, I didn’t want to leave
I left behind stones I left unturned
And faces who wait for my return

I felt the nightlife, in the fourth of a Latin kind
With a pint in hand, dancing to the buskers outside
Flags of a thousands nations, the colours breathe air into the cobbled stones below
People of a thousand nations, have walked these streets, foreigners welcomed as one of their own

Those city bells, they call me
And at the time, I didn’t want to leave
I left behind stones I left unturned
And friendships who wait for my return

The crowded bar is silent, just absorbing the band and good company
I didn’t mean to outrun my luck, feeling so at piece with the music playin' next to me
At the turn of a new day, take a stroll along the boardwalk
Alone at the beach with my footprints and I, and the greatest smile I’ve laid my eyes on

Those city bells, they call me
And at the time, I didn’t want to leave
I left behind stones I left unturned
And I can't wait 'til I return
