Saving It For Later

Written as part of a songwriting challenge, the prompt was 'Saving It For Later', and as I was discussing the prompt with a friend, she mentioned a story of her grandmother keeping a perfume bottle and saving it, only to never get the chance to open it. The song developed from there, and is influenced by the musical stylings of Joel Gardner and Wilcox:Hulse with the main instrument being a Seagull Merlin Dulcimer as opposed to my usual ukulele.

Gifted an old Chanel bottle, save it for a special day
Puttin' it off till the time is right, the right time never came
Years pass still unopened, dust gathers on the glass
Standing solitary in the sunlight, as the sun sets, my time has passed

I'd always learned how to save
With the hope that things would change
I’d been saving it for later but tomorrow never came

Commute to my day job, stick to the safe routine
A wedding smile and an unborn child my house now imprisons me

Wish I could pursue my passions, Afraid of the uncertainty
Keep ticking over ‘til the kids grow older, got to put them before me

I need to free my artistic mind
Been waiting for a better time
I’d been saving it for later but tomorrow never came

Listening to her guy problems
I swear she’s the love of my life
How will get there as the “best friend” Always bridesmaid never the bride

I’ve spent too long self-debating leaving my true thoughts unseen
I don’t want to lay on my deathbed, asking what could have been

The perfect moment’s never right
There's never been a better time
If you save it all for later then tomorrow never comes
