The Lonely Valentine

from Cartoon Physics by Marc Gallagher

/

about

I wrote this on February 13th 2018. It had dawned on me that the following day would be the first time in 4 years that I would experience Valentine's Day as a single man. Naturally I got sad at the thought and but some music to my feelings.

lyrics

Another solitary morning, crumpled sheets to my side
Words unsaid with a space in the bed on this February night
A day for joy and lovers, feeling warm like summertime
Spare a thought for me the lonely valentine

No energy to keep tidy, bed remains unmade
Creases in place like my unshaven face, don’t want to see the light of day
As the world goes out dancing, I germinate to one side
Spare a thought for me the lonely valentine

Another year of reflection, analyse what attracts
How a woman sees my inadequacies, no matter how I adapt
I wish that I could be charming, I know I’m not pleasing to the eye
I’m just sitting here as the lonely valentine

Another solitary morning, as I make the bed on both sides
Day one sets in as the journey begins, the start of the rest of my life
I’ll walk until my clothes fit me, and hope someday they’ll come a time
I'll no longer be the lonely valentine
